NameClover Hill CollectionCollection summaryHenry (Harry) Thomas began farming at 'Clover Hill' in 1894. 'Clover Hill' was a mountainside property, with road access about 2 miles up Macquarie Pass.

Henry married Mary James from Shellharbour in 1896. They farmed at 'Clover Hill' for sixteen years before moving to Shellharbour in 1912 to their new home, 'St Ives'. Most of their children were born at 'Clover Hill'

Ben Turner, born in England in 1901, was a world record parachutist in England, a manufacturer of parachutes in Australia in the 1940s, and the designer of the 'Scamp' swimsuit. He was a pilot and established Southern Cross Air, operating in the South Coast area. Ben retired in 1949 and moved to 'Clover Hill' (The former Thomas family farm) with his wife Jean and their English sheep dog, Roger.

In the 1970's, the historic Clover Hill homestead burnt down, and the NWPS acquired his property as part of Macquarie Pass National Park. Despite all this, Ben built his English Tudor style Manor House, known locally as 'Ben's Folly'. It was built around huge rock formations on the property, the rocks also forming part of the interior of the building. Ben died at Clover Hill in May 2001.

These photographs are from the Thomas and Turner family collections, and show life at the farm from the 1890's to 1970's.
