She contracted polio at an early age and was confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of her life.
As a young girl she learnt to sew and crochet, winning many prizes at local shows. With the help of her cousins and friend she managed to travel to Wollongong Technical College by train and qualified as a professional dressmaker.
Gabrielle worked for many years from the family home, sewing by hand until she acquired a hand operated Singer sewing machine. She was outstanding in drafting patterns and could make wedding dresses from measurements, with little or no alteration required.
She furthered her profession by setting up a dressmaking school Mena Brielle in Sydney, teaching over 100 pupils in day and evening classes, until her retirement.
