He arrived in Australia aboard 'Elizabeth' in 1845, age 7, with his parents, Edmund and Mary, and five siblings.

William married Charity Grace Dennis at Wollongong in 1858. Charity was the daughter of convict, James Dennis and his de-facto partner, Elizabeth Spinks.

William and Charity had at least 15 children.

Son John King, married Eliza Bradney (daughter of John Bradney and Ann Pugh Nichols). Descendants of John and Eliza include Shellharbour Municipal Town Clerk, Desmond Stanley King, and Albion Park blacksmith, Edwin Oliver 'Ollie' Wilson.
