NameWhitfield, BeverleyPlace of ResidenceShellharbour VillageBiographyBeverley Joy Whitfield was born in 1954 to Maxwell Thomas and Eva Margaret Whitfield (nee Faulks). Her great grandparents were Shellharbour builder, Thomas Daniel Whitfield, and Henrietta Bursill.

Beverley was an Australian Olympic swimmer and record holder.

Beverley trained with her uncle at Shellharbour and from the age of 11 trained with Olympian Terry Gathercole in Sydney. In 1968 she won the 100m and 200m breaststroke in the under-14 division at the state championships before placing second in her age at the national titles in Hobart.

In 1970, Beverley won both breaststroke titles at the Australian Championships, toured South Africa with the national team, and at the Edinburgh British Commonwealth Games, won individual gold medals over 100m and 200m, and shared in a medley relay gold medal. She won both breaststroke events again in 1971 at the Australian Championships.

Her highest state and national honours were achieved in breaststroke when she won a gold and a bronze medal for 200m and 100m breaststroke, representing Australia in the Munich Olympic Games in 1972.

In 1974 Beverley competed at the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch New Zealand and took home two silver medals, one for the 200m breaststroke, and one for the 4x100m medley relay.

Beverley won a total of eight national championships and two New Zealand national championships and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1995.
