He attended Shellharbour Public School and later worked on the family farm at Bass Point.
In 1916, he joined the 18th Battalion AIF to serve overseas. Gus’ training took place in England at Rolleston Camp on the Salisbury Plain. The 18th Battalion left for France 10 October 1917.
After numerous battles and many hardships, AM East was killed at Morlancourt on the Somme, France 19 May 1918, aged 25 years. He is buried at the British Cemetery, Sailly, Laurette, France.DonorBailey, June
