Provenance and SignifcanceWalter John Thomas was born 21 April 1889, the son of William and Jane Thomas (nee Pearson).
The family farmed at 'Oakvale', Calderwood.
On 21 October 1916 Walter joined the 1st Light Horse Regiment "B" Squadron, and served in Egypt. He later took part in Gallipoli where he was wounded and discharged in 1916.
Walter re-enlisted 6 weeks later and embarked with the 22nd Reinforcement 13th Battalion, taking part in the Battle of Bullecourt, where he was taken prisoner. In an exchange of prisoners he was and admitted 7 September 1919 to 'Beaufort' War hospital.
On his return to Australia he took up Ministry in the Methodist Church commencing 26 years of service.
Walter met Isabella McCall during the war and married her after taking up his church work. Walter passed away aged 68 years and is buried at Marshall Mount Cemetery. DonorThomas, YvonneExternal LinkSoldier's Missing 1917
