The family settled at Kangaroo Valley for about 5 years where John’s father managed an estate for Henry Osborne. The family later moved to Stockyard Mountain where John remained living until he retired from farming and moved to Albion Park.
John Brownlee was one of the founders of the Albion Park Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Society and did much work for the development of the Albion Park Show. John Brownlee’s name, as president of the Albion Park AH&I Society, is inscribed on the plaque dedicated to the official opening of Macquarie Pass in 1898.
John’s brother, William Brownlee commenced mining coal on his property at Tongarra in the 1880’s. The coal at Tongarra Mine was regarded as high quality and on par with Newcastle which was considered the best.
At the time of his death in 1924, aged 90 years, John was the last survivor of the 310 persons who signed the petition to form the Municipality of Shellharbour in 1858.
John Brownlee served as alderman for Shellharbour Municipal Council for 19 years and was elected mayor in 1881.
