Looking southeast over Lysaghts buildings (now Colorbond). Port Kembla town and Hill 60 top left hand corner.
Top right - smoke from the Australian Iron & Steel Open Hearth Furnace Stacks and Griffins Bay. In the south easter corner of Griffins Bay there is a horizontal white line. This is the tank trap excavated to prevent Japanese tanks from moving up the coast in the event of an invasion.
The white line across the top of most of the photo mark the sand hills that stretched from Hill 60 to the Lake entrance. The sand dunes were transported and used to fill Tom Thumb Lagoon (on the left) and raise its height to allow for the Hot Strip Mill and Template Mill to be constructed.
