NameHanlyAlternative NameHanleyDescriptionNicholas Hanly was born c.1821, Moorstown, County Tipperary, Ireland, to Michael and Ellen Hanly. It is not known when Nicholas arrived in Shellharbour, as no shipping records have been located.

Nicholas settled at ‘Rocklow’ Dunmore, and by 1857 had married Johanna Downey at Kiama.

Johanna was born c.1836, Fethard, County Tipperary, the daughter of William and Bridget (nee Walsh). Johanna arrived in Australia abord ‘Rajahgopaul’ in 1852, with her parents and siblings – Mary, John, Patrick, James, William and Ellen. The Downey family, also settled at Rocklow, Dunmore.

Nicholas and Johanna continued to live in the area for the rest of their lives. The couple had 11 children –

Michael Daniel b.1859 (died 1939, Rocklow, Dunmore)
Bridget b,1861 (married Patrick Fields, died 1955, Gerringong)
Mary b.1863 (died 1898, St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney)
James Nicholas b.1865 died 1909, Sacred Heart Hospice, Sydney)
Nicholas Patrick b.1868 (died 1952, Rocklow, Dunmore)
William b.1870 (died 1948, Rocklow’, Dunmore)
Johanna b.1872 (died 1932, private hospital, Sydney)
Catherine b.1874 (married Patrick Devery, died 1961, Gerringong)
Anne b.1876 (died 1937, Rocklow, Dunmore)
Thomas b.1878 (died 1914, Mullumbimby)

Johanna died in 1901,and Nicholas in 1906. They were buried at Jamberoo Catholic Cemetery.

Nicholas’ obituary in 1906, stated he had been a colonist for 62 years, making his arrival in Australia c.1844.

Unmarried siblings, Michael, Mary, James, Nicholas, William, Johanna and Anne, lived all their lives on the family farm, Rocklow, at Dunmore.
