A plaque reads “Commemorates commencement of construction of the first stage of Shellharbour Technical College-The Hon, Eric Bedford B.A., M.L.A. Minister for Education 24th October 1977. W.G. Petersen M.L.A. Minister for Illawarra- M. A.Watson Director of Technical and Further Education- C.P. Weatherburn, Government Architect”.
Another plaque reads “The college was officially opened by W.G. Petersen M.P. Member for Illawarra 7th November 1978 – Hon Eric Bedford B.A.,M.P. Minister for Education. M.A. Watson Director of Technical and Further Education. J.W. Thomson Government Architect”.
Stage One opened to students in 1977 for fashion, office administration, electrical trades and a few youth classes. Stage Two trades began- fitting and machinery, welding, office administration and in January 1982 Electrical Trades moved in and fashion stayed in Stage One.
In 1984 Stage 3 came on line with computer and business studies section. Stage 4 began in 1998 when the automotive moved from Wollongong. Stage 5, the new library was built in 2006.
Ghost Story- As an anecdote, some will remember the original D Block Stage 2 white building fondly called “The Shearing Shed” known to house a ghost at various times. The building is now a brown colour, and more sedate appearance.
