NameRotary Club ShellharbourDescriptionThe Rotary Club of Shellharbour was formed by Hedley Johnson and Vic Lyons from the Rotary Club of Kiama, 2 July 1966. Many well known locals were inducted at the organisations commencement.
Charter members of the day included Gunther Bayer - religion and Christianity, Bill Bout - painting and decorating, Ray Clay - insurance and life, Bob Fokke de Jong - electrical good retailing, Laurie Garvin - plumbing, Roy Goodwin - pharmacy, Ron Graham - plaster distributing, and Ray Hippisley - bricklaying.
International projects were an integral feature of the club. The overseas assistance began in 1974 with the provision of 15 school desks to a school in Indonesia.
Shellharbour Rotary was also actively involved in the youth exchange program, which enables secondary students to travel abroad for a year, advancing international understanding and goodwill.
For the first six years of the clubs formation, members met at the Albion Park Hotel, until moving to the Shellharbour Workers Club in 1972.
Some major community projects Rotary have completed over the years include the construction of toilet blocks and amenities for Albion Park Rail Scouts, the planting of Rotary Park at Albion Park Rail, installations of playgrounds at Mount Warrigal and Lake South, construction of the entrance gateway at Bass Point in 1974, and the purchase of the Illawarra's first intensive care ambulance.
