TitleMacquarie Pass 100 year commemorative plaquePhoto Number000803Date1998DescriptionMacquarie Pass was used by Aboriginals for many years before Ben Rixon was paid 25 Pounds to cut a track passable to horses and stock. Between 1863 and 1869 the track was upgraded to allow heavier traffic. Residents petitioned the Council for many years to improve the condition of the road. Work finally began on the Pass in February 1897. The new Macquarie Pass road was officially opened July 4th 1898 by The Hon. J H Young, Minister for Works, and Archibald Campbell MP. The road became the main link to the Highlands.LocationAlbion ParkStudioNeryl EastDonorTongarra Heritage Society Inc
