TitleOld Macquarie Pass track 1998Photo Number000801Date1998DescriptionMacquarie Pass was used by Aboriginal People for thousands of years before Ben Rixon was paid 25 Pounds to cut a track passable to horses and stock.
Between 1863 and 1869 the track was upgraded to allow heavier traffic. Residents petitioned the Council for many years to improve the condition of the road. Work finally began on the Pass in February 1897.
The new Macquarie Pass road was officially opened July 4 1898 by The Hon. J H Young, Minister for Works, and Archibald Campbell MP.
The road became the main link to the Highlands.LocationMacquarie PassStudioKevin GillisDonorTongarra Heritage Society Inc
