He sailed to Australia in 1790 as an assistant surgeon on the Second Fleet. He was sent to Norfolk Island where his work as a surgeon led to his promotion to Superintendent of Convicts. He returned to Sydney and was the colony's principal surgeon. He was also appointed a magistrate, superintendent of police, and was a foundation director of the Bank of NSW. He was given a number of land grants in the Shellharbour area between Lake Illawarra and Minnamurra River. The estate was called 'Peterborough'.
