Angela (Ann) Harrison was the first woman elected to Shellharbour Municipal Council in 1973.
In 1953, Bob commenced work at AIS Steelworks Port Kembla. In 1955 he became a waterside worker and active in the labour movement, particularly the Maritime Union of Australia.
During his 20 years of service to Shellharbour Municipal Council, Bob spent a collective 15 years as Mayor, serving from 1974-1974 and 1977-1991. Ann served as alderman from 1973-1977, and again from 1980-1991.
Bob was the Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for the seat of Kiama from 1986-1999. He was a life member of the Maritime Union of Australia, a life member of the South Coast Labour Council, and a life member of the Australian Labor Party.
Bob was awarded an Order of Australia in 2005, for service to state and local government and to the community of Shellharbour.
Together Bob and Ann were the longest serving husband and wife team in New South Wales contributing much to the growth of Shellharbour for 35 years.
In 2013, Shellharbour City Centre’s five-hectare City Park was renamed Harrison Park in honour of Bob and Ann Harrison’s contribution to the community.
