TitleWindang IslandPhoto Number001162Date2000DescriptionWindang Island is located outside the entrance to Lake Illawarra. Plans were made in the 1890s to use Lake Illawarra as a coal exporting harbour. The entrance was to be dredged to allow access for large ships to carry coal from the Dapto area. The remains of a breakwater can be seen on the mainland side of the island, and rusted rail tracks on the island. The rail line was used to carry rock from the quarry on the south western side of the island to build the breakwater. The scheme was abandoned in favour of Port Kembla Harbour.PlaceWindang Island and Railway RelicsStudioDi Eagleton
