NameFlindersTypeSuburbDescriptionThe area which we now associate with Flinders was originally part the Bassett-Darley and Towns Estates.
Captain Darley and Towns, were the sons-in-law of original land owner D’Arcy Wentworth. The suburb is named after Matthew Flinders, coastal explorer who sailed into Lake Illawarra in 1796 with George Bass.
Today it is a suburb bounded, more or less, by the Illawarra Highway, Tongarra and Jamberoo Roads. It adjoins the suburbs of Croom on the west and Shellharbour on the east.
