He was the eldest of two children and was born at Marshall Mount. George was actively involved in the community and elected trustee of the Albion Park Pioneer Cemetery and Marshall Mount Cemetery at Calderwood. He was a foundation member of the Marshall Mount Old Time Dance committee, dances being held in the school or the front lounge of Marshall Mount House prior to moving to the Hall. He was a staunch supporter of the Tongarra Museum and a member of the Tongarra Heritage Society.
