Samuel Marks purchased 247 acres of the land in the 1870s and sold it to John Russell in the 1880s. John and Sarah Johnston leased this property from John Russell on the 1st October 1910 and worked the land as a dairy farm. Johnston eventually purchased the property on the 16th February, 1916. The Johnston Family bred Australian Illawarra Shorthorn cattle and exhibited successfully at South Coast shows for over 30 years.
