Between 1863 and 1869 the track was upgraded to allow heavier traffic. The road became the main link to the Highlands by 1878. Residents petitioned the Council for many years to improve the condition of the road. Work finally began on the Pass in February 1897. The new Macquarie Pass road was officially opened July 4th 1898 by The Hon. J. H.
