It was built by Hughes Bros Pty Ltd (Port Kembla) on the site of the current Amity College, Shellharbour Road, and was originally 3,200 sq ft. The school cost $35,000 to construct.
Additions were made to the school over the years.
The school's beginnings were an initiative of Shellharbour Apex Club c.1963. In those days, disabled children were educated by volunteer parents. The Apex Club pushed for government operated education.
Tawarra School was the forerunner of Peterborough School (William Street, Barrack Heights).
