The building was purpose built as a guest house originally containing 49 rooms, reflecting the rise of popularity of the area as a tourist destination. Many social dances, concerts and functions were held as 'Clermont' became the cultural centre of the area. The building was later converted to a boarding house and eventually fell into disrepair.
