The McGills cleared land and established a farm on the south side of the Macquarie River. Andrew was a prominent breeder of dairy cattle and active in the foundation of the Australian Illawarra Shorthorn breed. He was an alderman on the first Shellharbour Municipal Council in 1859 and served for four years.
