TitleOld cemetery site at ShellharbourPhoto Number002690Date1900-1910DescriptionA general cemetery was established in the early days of settlement in Shellharbour on the sand dunes near the point south of Shellharbour Harbour. The cemetery was exposed to stormy weather which reportedly exposed coffins and skeletal material during heavy seas. G L Fuller donated land south of Shellharbour on the road to Dunmore for a new cemetery in 1894, which was dedicated on the 23rd April, 1895. The old cemetery was closed and the land included as part of the Shellharbour Village Reserve in 1893. No records have been found of burials in the cemetery. It is assumed some of the bodies were exhumed and the headstones transferred to other cemeteries in the district. Many of the main district cemeteries have headstones with dates of burial much earlier than the establishment of those cemeteries.PlaceShellharbour Old Sand CemeteryLocationShellharbour VillageDonorPhelan, RobertEast, Russell
