Thomas arrived in Australia aged 13 years with his parents and siblings abord the 'Kate' in 1852. The family settled on the Peterborough Estate (Shellharbour). Thomas' uncle William (Andrew's brother) was already in Wollongong and working as a farmer.

In 1864, Thomas married Catherine Donnelly at the Church of England schoolhouse at Jamberoo.

Thomas and Catherine had five children;

Jane Elizabeth b.1866 (married Frederick Gulley, died 1903, Lismore)
Sarah Theresa b.1867 (married James McDougall, died 1929, Sydney)
William George b.1869 (married Jane Armstrong, died 1910, Casino)
David James b.1871 (married Selina Wood, died 1938, QLD)
Edith Annie b.1879 (married Theodore Fredericks, died 1962, Victoria)

Thomas operated a hotel at Shellharbour. The hotel was originally Graham's Peterborough Store. In 1872, the store became the Royal Hotel. The hotel was on the main 'Lake' road, contained 11 rooms, a stone kitchen, store and granary, commodious stabling and a large underground tank. Today, it is the site of the old Shellharbour Workers Club, on the NW corner of Addison and Mary Streets, Shellharbour.

Thomas moved to Kiama to operate the Royal Hotel there in the 1880's. He eventually moved his family north to Casino/Lismore areas.

Thomas died at Lismore in 1907 aged 67 years. Catherine died in 1919 aged 73 years. They were both buried at North Lismore Cemetery.
