Esau found himself in trouble on two reported occasions before his transportation.

'Imprisoned seven days in Leeds Gaol and privately whipped - Richard Shaw and Esau Longbottom for stealing four yards of woollen floor-cloth, the property of Mr Joseph Pickles, tailor and draper.' (Leeds Intelligencer Thursday Oct 21 1830)

'Yesterday Esau Longbottom and Charles Hudson were committed to Wakefield House of Correction for three months each, for vagrancy in attempting to steal cheese from a cart that was standing in Briggate.' (Leeds Intelligencer Thursday January 27 1831)

In 1832, he was convicted of stealing and sentenced to 14 years transportation.

'Transported for Fourteen Years - Esau Longbottom and William Eastburn for stealing 150 years of woollen cloth from the warehouse of Messrs Clapham, brothers in Hunslet Lane.' (Leeds Intelligencer Thursday October 18 1832)

Esau spent time on the prison hulk ‘Justitia’ moored at Woolwich before being transported.
He arrived in Australia aboard the 'Asia' in 1833. His convict indent describes his as a carter, 5 feet 8 inches tall, fair ruddy and freckled, small hairy and mole right side of chin. Small mole inside right wrist. ELI 7 ME inside lower left arm. Scar back of left forefinger.

On arrival Esau was discharge to George Shelly at Parramatta. In 1841, he absconded from AA Company, Port Stephens and was listed in the NSW Government Gazette.

Esau received his Ticket of Leave in 1845 and was allowed to remain in the District of Port Stephens. He received his Certificate of Freedom 15 January 1849. His height was now 5 feet 9.5 inches and his hair was described as red.

Esau had four known children with Catherine (Kate) Lippear, an Aboriginal woman from the Newcastle area.

The couple moved to the Shoalhaven, and their children were born at Kiama and Bolong.

Catherine died at Nowra in 1864, and Esau in 1879. They were buried at the Numbaa Cemetery.
