In the 1860 United States Federal Census in 1860, his mother Abigail listed him as 34 years old and 'in Australia'.
We believe Joseph arrived in Australia in 1853 -1854.

Joseph involved himself in local affairs and became a committee member for the return of Mr. Parkes and signed a petition for Shellharbour municipality.
Joseph Blaney died of heart disease in 1865, aged just 39 years old, and was buried at the old Sand Cemetery in Shellharbour.
The will of Joseph shows that he was the recipient of rents from real estate properties in Boston Massachusetts U.S.A, which was his share of his father's will along with other members of the family which, he received through Abner Hunt Bowman of Boston Massachusetts.
