NamePriaulxAlternative NamePriaux, Preaux, Preoo, PreoDescriptionJohn Priaulx (spelt various ways and eventually anglicised), was born about 1833 in Guernsey, Channel Islands, UK.
In 1855 when he was 22, he arrived in Australia aboard ‘Ascendant’. He was listed as an agricultural labourer and could both read and write.
Three years after his arrival, in 1858, he married Bridget Cummins at Kiama.
The couple settled at Stoney Creek, Croom, where 12 children were born -

James b. 1873 (Preoo) (married Susan Hall, died 1952, Bega)
Bridget (Preo) b.1874 (married Daniel McGlinchey, died 1922, Raymond Terrace)
Eliza b.1876 (Preoo) (married Amos Sharpe, died 1963, Lismore)
Patrick (Preo) b.1877(married Adelaide Nicholson, died 1941, Granville)
Annie b.1881 (died 1915, Bega)
John suffered a horrific accident 15 April 1859, just months after his marriage, when his right arms was torn off as he was feeding a thrashing machine. A community appeal was established to secure funds to purchase a few cows, to support John and his wife.
Around the time of the birth of their youngest children, the family moved to Bega.
John died in 1915 at Bega. Bridget the following year.
