The family emigrated to Australia in 1838 on the ship 'Saint George' - Archibald and his younger brother, Alexander (who died on the journey to Australia), and his sister Alexandria Victoria (born on the ship) aged about 3 months. On board the same ship were the Beatson and Mc Gill families, who settled at Albion Park.
Archibald spent the early part of his life in Gerringong, farming with his father. Three more children were born in Australia, Margaret, Alexander and James.
At the age of 21, Archibald went to the diggings at Ballarat and was quite successful. He returned home, then went to Lachlan where he engaged in mining pursuits unsuccessfully.
Returning to the Illawarra in 1867, he purchased an interest in The 'Illawarra Mercury' from Mr. Garret, and eventually became the sole proprietor of the newspaper in 1883.
Archibald married Margaret Farrell and they had four children.
In 1891, Archibald became Member for Illawarra and Member of the NSW Legislative Assembly. He served in these roles until his death in 1903.
Apart from his parliamentary duties he was also director of The Illawarra Mutual Building Society, was instrumental in construction of Macquarie Pass and improving conditions in the Shellharbour Municipality the Shellharbour breakwater being one of many such projects.
