He came to Australia c.1856, and in 1865 at the Presbyterian Church in Wollongong, married Sarah Hazelton, daughter of Edward and Hannah Hazelton of Yellow Rock.
The couple lived on the rise on Wollongong Street, Shellharbour from about 1865-1880. Their property was bounded by St Paul's Church of England.
Evan and Sarah had nine children, seven of whom were born at Shellharbour.

Evan was a member of the Allowrie Division of the Sons of Temperance, and was closely affiliated with James Cawdell through the organisation.
Evan worked as a stone mason and builder and completed the following confirmed works -
1. Masonry repairs to the original Shellharbour Council Chambers in Addison Street, 1870.
2. Construction of the original court house and lock-up in Mary Street (later renamed Woodbine) 1875-1877.
3. Construction of the original sandstone portion of Shellharbour Public School, 1870.
4. Construction of additional rooms and a verandah for Shellharbour Public School, 1873.
The family moved to Wollongong in 1880 and Evan was presented with an address by the members of the Allowrie Division, Sons of Temperance.
Evan died in 1918 and was buried at Wollongong Cemetery. Sarah died the following year.
