According to Joseph's obituary, he arrived in Australia in 1855. Joseph's wife name was Mary Ann. It is not clear if she arrived with him from England, or if they married in Australia.
The Durrell's settled on the Reddall Estate at Shellharbour. For many years they lived at Stoney Range.
Joseph died 17 July 1893 aged 70 years and was buried at the Albion Park Anglican Cemetery.
In 1901 the family home at Stoney Range was destroyed by fire. Mary Ann Durrell lost most of the contents of the home which was not insured.
Mary Ann fell from a horse and broke her collarbone in 1922. She was taken to hospital and died a few weeks later, aged 87 years. Mary Ann was buried at the Albion Park Anglican Cemetery.
In her Will dated 6 February 1920, Mary Ann left 5 pounds and her duchess chest of drawers to Thomas Atchison of Shellharbour, in recognition and reward for services kindly rendered.
