NameFitzgerald (John Daniel Branch)DescriptionJohn Daniel Fitzgerald was born about 1821 in Limerick, Ireland, to John M and Mary Fitzgerald.

In Victoria, in 1856 he married Mary Ann Cullen/Culthane, also a native of Limerick. John was a school teacher.

John and Mary travelled to New Zealand after their marriage, where two sons were born, Otho and Daniel. Otho died when he was just 3 years old.

The Fitzgerald's must have returned to Australia prior to 1862, as they began teaching and their son John Daniel Jnr. was born at Shellharbour 11 June the same year. Another son, Thomas, was born at Shellharbour in 1865.

John and Mary conducted a school at Dunmore. The local residents wanted a national school, and the Fitzgerald's were willing to act as teachers. The school opened in March 1862. It was a wooden building with 21 boys and 13 girls enrolled.

By 1868 the school was in a bad state of repairs and Mr Fitzgerald resigned to take up another position.

John Daniel Fitzgerald Jnr. went on to become a well respected compositor, journalist, barrister and politician.

Brothers Dan and Tom formed the successful and well-known Fitzgerald's Bros Circus.
