Collection summaryThe Tongarra Heritage Society existed from 1987 to 2022. Its aims and objectives were to identify, preserve and promote our local heritage, actively support the functioning of the (then) Tongarra Bicentennial Museum at Albion Park, and to liaise with local council, libraries and interest groups.
The Society was created specifically to undertake the establishment of the Museum. For many years the Society was solely responsible for its operation until Shellharbour Council created a part-time curator’s position within its library staff. The Society then became a supporting body for the curator.
With the building of the new Civic Centre, Library and Museum at Shellharbour City, the Tongarra Museum’s collection was transferred to the new Shellharbour City Museum.
The Society’s aging membership made the difficult decision in July 2022 to wind up the Society’s activities, with their archival material being either passed to the Library for inclusion (in hard copy form) in the Research Room or to be progressively uploaded (in digital form) onto this section of the Discover Shellharbour database.
