The Dudgeon’s took up a seven-year clearing lease and cut back 60 acres of wild scrub at Saddleback Mountain.
Hugh purchased two cows from Henry Osborne’s strain for the production of butter. By the time the clearing lease expired in 1862, the Dudgeons owned 18 cows. They moved to a farm, 'Fountaindale' at Jamberoo, before settling at 'Hillview' farm, from where the famous Dudgeon stud took its name.
Hugh Dudgeon Jnr, eventually joined his father at 'Hillview,' and built up the Australia-wide renowned herd. Before Hugh Jnr died in 1930 aged 88, he passed over the herd to his son, Robert John ‘Jack’, Dudgeon, who carried on first at 'Hillview' farm, and later at 'Parkview' at Albion Park.
Hugh Dudgeon Snr lived at 'Hillview' until his death in 1885 aged 75. He was buried at Jamberoo Uniting Cemetery. Prudence died in 1898.
