Ruston Proctor Steam Shovel loading a dump truck with the Manning Wardle loc hauling system.
This loco was one of a pair bought by the NSW PWD in 1911 and used initially on a section of the North Coast railway construction. It was built by Manning Wardle & Co, Leeds, England, builder’s number 1780 of 1911.
In 1913 both locos were sold to the Metropolitan Water Sewerage & Drainage Board for construction work at Potts Hill reservoir where they were numbered “3” and “4”. Potts Hill was effectively completed in 1923.
It seems most likely that MW1780 was acquired at that time by Blue Metal Quarries Limited for their Dunmore quarry which was just getting started.
The other loco, No.4, went to Ryde pumping station, and still exists today as part of the Powerhouse Museum Collection.
