NameCockerillDescriptionWilliam Henry Cockerill was born in Yorkshire c.1817 to Henry and Jane Cockerill (nee Wear).
In 1840 he married Christina Bourdas (daughter of Christopher and Elizabeth), and 13 years later in 1853, the couple and their two children Christopher aged 12, and Elizabeth Jane aged 8 arrived in Sydney aboard the 'Fortune'.
The family settled on the Terry's Meadows estate (Albion Park) and had another son John William, born in 1854. They soon moved to Long Point (Bass Point, Shellharbour) where they farmed for over 20 years. In 1878 the family moved to Kangaloon. When William retired from farming, he and Christina moved to Berry to live with their son, John.
Christina died in 1898 and was buried at Gerringong Cemetery. Her death certificate states she had four children - Elizabeth and John still living, and two males (including Christopher) deceased. According to her obituary, one son died in England.
William died in 1903 and was buried at Gerringong Cemetery. He had lived with his son in Berry in the later years of his life.
Christopher Cockerill married Caroline Hannah Wenham in 1870. They had two children Mary Christina b.1874 and Charlotte Elizabeth b.1877, before Christopher sadly died in 1879 aged 31 years. He was buried at Gerringong Cemetery. Hi wide Caroline died just a few months later in September 1879.
Elizabeth Cockerill married Joseph George Fryer in 1867 at Shellharbour. They had four children, William H b.1868, Christina b.1869, , Walter Dunster b.1872, and Sophia b.1874. The family eventually moved to Lismore where they farmed for 30 years. Elizabeth died in 1920.
John Cockerill married Barbara Pickeman at Kiama in 1874. They had ten known children, Susan Pickeman b.1875 (died 1877), Robert b.1877, William Henry b.1879, Christina Elizabeth b.1881, Susan b.1884, John b.1885, (died 1885) Barbara A b.1886, John Herbert b.1890, Albert Edward b.1892, Charles E J b.1895.
