NameAitken, George MoreheadDate of Birth1846Date of Death1938OccupationStorekeeperBiographyGeorge Aitken (sometimes spelt Aitkin) was born Tasmania 23 June 1846 to George Cruikshank Aitken and Mary Aitken (formerly Kevell).
George had several siblings John Cruikshank, Mary, Frank Gordon, Albert Alexander and Fanny Isabella.
He married Louisa Sarah Ann Mann in 1870 at Morpeth N.S.W.
We have been able to establish that the Aitkens were in the district by 1868. George and John, his brother, were called as witnesses in a court case in Kiama Courthouse, where George was described as a storekeeper in Shellharbour.
Newspaper articles from Tasmania show that George's father was insolvent in 1847, and had attempted to sail to Port Phillip on the cutter 'Allison'. He used at times various combinations of his name.
George was charged with larceny while working at the Peterborough Store and Post-Office, Shellharbour in 1871. He was sentenced to 3 years hard labour at Darlinghurst Gaol.
Several witnesses were called to give evidence, including his 15 year old brother Francis (Frank).
