Acland, Edward (Ted)
DESCRIPTION
BiographyEdward Richard Acland was born in 1890 at Petersham, to Samuel and Matilda Acland (nee Gates).
In 1914, Edward married Ellen ‘Margaret’ Glenn at Redfern and they had the following known children;
Irene Ireton b.1915
Alice Jean b.1917 (married Joseph William Henry Ryan, died 2004, Bateman’s Bay)
Albert b.1919
Enid b.1922
Edward, Margaret and family lived at Dunmore between 1940 and 1945, and operated the Dunmore Post Office and Store. The family lived in a house behind the shop which was a separate building joined by a passageway.
Their daughter Enid, married Ken Robertson in 1944.
Enid remembered the bakery supplied bread to Shellharbour, Minnamurra & parts of Kiama. Several mailmen would deliver bread on their runs. As well as the bakery there was a general store that sold bread, pies, cakes, sweets, tobacco, and the Post Office. It was during the war so tea, sugar and butter were rationed. Enid's parents were responsible for the collection of coupons with every sale, and return to the relevant Government office. At times they issued new ration books, checking the identification of the applicant.
Petrol was also rationed (they didn't have a bowser). There was no electricity in the village so all work in the bakehouse was done by hand. They had a "Gloria" light in the living room run on gas. To light you used a taper that had been dipped in mentholated spirit. They had a kerosene refrigerator it didn't freeze but kept the butter firm.
Mailbags arrived early in the morning at Shellharbour railway station at about 6;40am it was Enid's job to bring the bags from the station and help sort the mail for the mailmen to pick up with the bread before breakfast.
Frank Brett drove the delivery van and was also a pianist. His wife played the drums and they provided music for the local dances.
Few people had cars as petrol was scarce so Frank and his wife would take people to the dances. A troop of Light Horse were stationed at Jamberoo and many of these attended the dances. Searchlights were set up on a hill overlooking Dunmore.
Enid's father played golf and went to the Masonic Lodge. Trips to Kiama for banking and other purposes were by bus, clothing was rationed too.
Enid's fiancé was in the army and they married in Kiama in 1944. Ken and Enid lived at Sutton Grange near Bowning.
