TitleStone Tools - FlakedObject TypeFirst NationsDescriptionThese flaked stone tools were collected from Bellambi to Bass Point from 1962 to 1968,
Flaked stone tools were made by removing a sharp fragment from a piece of stone, called a core. Flakes became blunt fairly quickly through use, however, the cutting edge could be retouched and sharpened by removing tiny flakes of stone from the blunted edge.
Flaked tools were used for shaping objects, spear tips, knives, and scrapers to prepare plant and animal foods.
Flaked tools like these were made from a variety of materials; typically, high silica stone like flint or quartz, and are commonly found near creeks and rivers in the Illawarra.
