The decorative booties are made from shells collected from Illawarra and South Coast beaches.

This type of shell art was originally made by Aboriginal women of the La Perouse mission community in Sydney.

Women earned an income by making beautiful pieces of art from local shells, including decorative boxes, slippers and booties, and the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge models.

Aunty Esme Timbery, who comes from a long line of shell workers from La Perouse, won the Parliament of New South Wales Indigenous Art Prize in 2005, for her shelled bridges.
