NameBerthaDescriptionIn September 1879 the schooner 'Bertha' was wrecked of Bass Point.
She was a wooden topsail schooner of 64 tons, built in 1864 and Captained by Mahler.
'Bertha' was bound for Kiama when she was pushed ashore on the north side of Bass Point in a powerful north-east gale at 5.30am, 9 September 1879.
The weather was so bad, the headland could hardly be seen. The sails of the vessel were ripped, and every effort to save her failed.
She began breaking up quickly. Dharawal People camped at Bass Point rescued the captain, three crew members, and two passengers by conveying a rope line from the vessel to the shore.
All lives were saved.
Mr F.W. Cook, owner of 'Bertha' lost a second ship, the 'Franze' off the Five Islands the same day.
The vessels were both engaged in supplying basalt for the Government.
