In 1900, the Shellharbour Municipal Council decided there was a need for a new public cemetery for Albion Park on land set aside in Croome Road. A committee was formed, and later trustees were appointed, one of whom John Fraser pushed for the establishment of the cemetery.
John Fraser died on 22nd November 1901, his burial the first in Croome Cemetery Croome Road. The residents erected a monument to him in token of his many services to the community, unveiled by Archibald Campbell MP. The monument still stands to-day as a lasting memorial to “one of the truly great men of the district and apart from his leadership in public life, always had the interests of the man on the land at heart”.
