Pinned to page 212 - Newspaper clipping 29 November 1924 on Shellharbour School of Arts detailing the official opened of the Thomas Memorial Room at the School of Arts. President Mr H E Wickham opened proceedings. Details donated items including microscope, Chinese rain god carved from wood, 1150 books on every subject, curios, valuable works of art in oil and watercolour, a bound volume of steel engravings after Landseer, illustrated copy of Shakespeare's works, Chambers Encyclopedia of International Literature, Roman Potters, Aboriginal handiwork in curios and weapons, hand modelled miniature Shorthorn dairy herd. Contents donated by WM Thomas Surveyor of Armidale on his death to the Shellharbour School of Arts expressing a wish a room be built to house the collection in memory of his father and pioneer of Shellharbour John Thomas.

The Shellharbour School of Arts was established in August 1895 when Shellharbour Municipal Council agreed to provide the Council Chambers building in Addison Street for a meeting place, until Council sold the chambers building in 1896.

The School of Arts Committee was given land and a substantial donation of cash by George Laurence Fuller to erect a new building in Mary Street opposite the Public School.

The School of Arts was opened by the end of the year 1896, and with a library, served the recreational needs of the people, and continued actively as Shellharbour’s library, kindergarten, community and debating room.

In 1924, the Thomas Memorial Library was installed in a room at the School of Arts in memory of surveyor W. M. Thomas, and included a library of 1,150 books bequeathed by him. The room to contain the library was built by his wife Isabella in memory of their father John Thomas, 1857 settler of Shellharbour, one of the founders of the original Shellharbour Steam Navigation Co., Butter Export Co, and Anglican Church and an Alderman of the first Municipal Council.
