Isabella (Bella) was born in Scotland and came to Australia c.1879. She worked as a nurse and matron before her marriage to William Makin Thomas (son of John Thomas and Maria Haslam) in 1888.
Bella and William were unable to have children. They had a pet magpie for many years who they adored, and purchased this plate in his honour. Bella and William used two glass salt cellars, brought to Australia by William's parents in 1838, as feeding dishes for their beloved pet.
William Thomas bequeathed over 1000 books to the Shellharbour School of Arts. A room to house the books was built by Isabella, in his memory.
Isabella died at Calderwood 6 August 1933.DonorFoulger, Carol
