15 Handmade Aprons, part of the installation by Flossie Peitsch, 'Sleeves and Sheets, Socks and Pockets - A Textured Studio Inquiry into Women's Work in the Illawarra', on exhibition at Wollongong City Gallery 7 May - 19 June 2011.

A travelling exhibition coordinated by Flossie Peitsch. The artist selected crafts persons to hand work a letter, spelling out the travelling exhibition's original title 'Chisholm's Homes'.

The exhibition recognised the history of women and work in the Illawarra, and celebrated 'The Emigrant's Friend' Caroline Chisholm, who worked for the betterment of early settler's causes, particularly women suffrage, in Australia.

Artists Statement -
'A woman's work in never done'. An old axion perhaps but, nevertheless, holding truth. Despite the invention of washing machines, vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, coffee makers and personal computers, we women are still even more inventive, finding new ways to expand 'work'. This speaks well of women's resourcefulness but also decries our own pitiable state of vulnerability. Looking at the history of women at work in the Illawarra since the 1850's and adding in my own brief experience here in this place, I see a highly textured patchwork of dislocation, loss, and alienation covered with adaptability, diligence, and resilience - cultural transition within diaspora. This exhibition is an interpretive sampler of women as 'the fabric of society'.
