On the base of the carving is the makers mark and 'Made in Ilife St' Provenance and SignifcanceJames Samuel (Sam) Endean was born at Burwood, NSW in 1908, to John Arthur William and Hannah Endean (nee Webster). His parents divorced in 1922 and John remarried Lilian Maude Beard (nee Johnson). The family moved to Wollongong and lived at Bourke Street.
Sam's father John worked as town clerk for North Illawarra Council.
Sam married Annie Doreen Couch in 1936. Annie was the daughter of James and Euphemia Couch (nee Chisholm) of Albion Park.
Sam worked as a surveyor and served as Acting Flight Lieutenant with the Royal Australian Air Force in WWII.
Sam died at Bexley 16 May 1981.
