James was born 1831, Worcestershire, England. he and his wife Harriet (nee Jones) arrived in Sydney on board the 'Telegraph' in 1853 and settled at Shellharbour. The couple had no children, and Harriet died in 1862.
James married his second wife Margaret McInnes in 1863 and they had four children, John b.1864, Mary Ann b.1865, Margaret b.1868, and James b.1876.
James Snr's son, John, ran the business during WWI.
The premises were sold to Ross Jordan, fisherman, in April 1949.
James' bootmakers shop was on the left with the big window.
