Letter copy presses were used to duplicate letters and documents in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
A letter or document written with the correct type of ink was placed on a oiled sheet of paper and positioned under the leaf of the copying book, or letter book. The leaf was dampened and overlaid with another sheet of oiled paper.
