Walter John Thomas was the son of William and Jane (nee Pearson) Thomas. On 21st October 1916, Walter joined the 1st Light Horse Regiment "B" Squadron, and served in Egypt, and later Gallipoli, where he was wounded, and invalided home. He was discharged in 1916.

Walter re-enlisted six weeks later, and embarked with the 22nd reinforcement 13th Battalion, taking part in the Battle of Bullecourt, where he was taken prisoner. On 7 September 1919, during a prisoner exchange, he was admitted to 'Beaufort' War Hospital.
