Milk and cream were weighed on the scales, in the days when cans of the products were brought to the factory from outlying farms. Farmers were paid accordingly for their farm produce.

On 'block days' farms in Shellharbour separated cream from milk. Cream was graded for the manufacture of different grades of butter.

The formal opening of the ICCD was 27 September 1899. C W Wood was appointed manager, and H R Hobart the engineer.

Two steam engines drove the machinery and the refrigerating plant. Pasteurization was introduced in 1903 and by 1905 the Company was delivering milk to Sydney in hermetically sealed tanks.

The butter making section was upgraded in 1925 and in 1935 a new milk section was opened. The Company continued to improve and in 1956 marketed the "Warrilla" brand of butter.
